Mysterious and Miraculous
Luke 1:34-35 (NIV®)
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
The virgin birth is a stumbling block for some people. It’s one of those things that can’t be fully understood with the information we have. But I don’t feel it diminishes my intellect one iota to say I believe that it happened. There are many things I can observe but not fully explain. I cannot describe the physical process through which energy is radiated from the sun, absorbed by a green plant with chlorophyll on the surface of the earth, which is ingested by a brown cow that produces white milk from which we get yellow butter and strawberry ice cream. But I can enjoy the benefits of that process without feeling intellectually violated. I benefit from a vast number of things that I lack the ability to fully process, and I’m at peace with that.
THINK ABOUT IT
The virgin birth is just one of God’s actions that cannot be scientifically explained. Have you made peace with the fact that God is not bound by the principles we use to explain our world? Are you prepared to explain your belief to people who do not share it?
Heavenly Father, You chose to send Your Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to save the world. How You chose to do this was a miraculous act of love on Your part. Open the eyes of my heart to Your majesty and power. May the name of Jesus be lifted up in my life. May Your truth be extended. May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ name, amen.
