Like a Dove

Matthew 3:16 (NIV®)

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.

This is a beautiful image isn’t it, the Holy Spirit descending like a dove onto the newly baptized Jesus? We too need the help of the Holy Spirit, so we want to become people who allow Him to move and work in our lives. When we meet Jesus in John’s gospel, His image is of “the Lamb of God” (John 1:29). If you want to know where the Holy Spirit resides, He comes upon individuals who reflect the characteristics of the Lamb with meekness, purity, gentleness, and humility. If we will cultivate those things, we will foster the involvement of the Holy Spirit. We will overcome our anxiety and uncertainties about Him and gain a comfort and familiarity with His presence. The results will be a force for good in our lives that can only come from God.

The Holy Spirit has a place in our lives that nothing else can fill―not personal Bible study, not small group interaction, not the best preaching. Is the Holy Spirit truly welcome in your life?

Heavenly Father, establish Your Word with power and authority. May Your Spirit pour over Your Church and bring repentance, cleansing, and a harvest of righteousness. I thank you for Your Spirit and invite Him into every part of my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
