A Transforming Almighty

Revelation 11:17 (NIV®)

“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was.”

The title “Almighty” is about power, and in this verse it is proclaimed by the elders surrounding God on their thrones in heaven. That God is “almighty” is quite a claim today because in a world of political correctness it is very politically incorrect. There is enormous pressure to say that all belief systems are the same, that it is completely inappropriate to suggest that one belief system is in any way superior to another. To do so, we’re told, makes us narrow-minded and bigoted and judgmental. I disagree. To believe in absolute truth is not a bigoted position—it is a liberating position. Christianity is not intended to demean or belittle other people. It is intended to give us a love and compassion for all persons, because apart from the person of Jesus Christ and our belief in Him, there is no distinction between us and anyone else. What we have chosen to believe―that God is indeed Almighty and that Jesus of Nazareth is His Son and the Savior of the world―has made transformation possible for any person who will believe. What a wonderful gift!

That God is “almighty” means that His power is unlimited. How does this impact the way you pray to Him and worship Him?

Heavenly Father, You are God Almighty, the One who is and was. You are holy and all knowing. I choose to humble myself and submit myself before You to learn Your ways. My ways have led me toward destruction, yet I know Your promises bring life. I give all praise and honor to You, my Lord.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
