A Perfect Lamb

John 1:29

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Jesus as “the Lamb of God” is imagery that is a little blind to us. We think of lambs as cute and cuddly, but during first-century Hebrew worship lambs were an annual sacrifice offered to God in exchange for His forgiveness of sin. During Passover, every family was commanded to kill and roast a lamb as a sacrifice and a ritual meal. Can you imagine as many as 100,000 lambs roasting all over the city of Jerusalem? The air would be filled with the aroma. So when John the Baptist declared that Jesus was “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” the people had a very vivid picture of what that sacrifice would mean.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Son and the sacrifice He made on my behalf. I thank You that Jesus made a sacrifice that would stand for eternity. I thank You that everything provided on the cross is complete and finished––nothing left to add––and I have access to every provision made. Help me to understand and receive all that You’ve done for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
