A Reminder of God’s Call

“Yet a man has risen to pursue you and seek your life, but the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with the Lord your God; and the lives of your enemies He shall sling out, as from the pocket of a sling. And it shall come to pass, when the Lord has done for my lord according to all the good that He has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you ruler over Israel, that this will be no grief to you, nor offense of heart to my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause, or that my lord has avenged himself. But when the Lord has dealt well with my lord, then remember your maidservant.”
1 Samuel 25:29-31

In her humility, Abigail reminded David of his call. She had heard about his integrity and how the Lord had fought his battles. Abigail gave David excellent counsel. She spoke common sense to David and helped him think through the actions he was determined to take. He should not damage his integrity. She reminded David of God’s presence in his life and gave confirmation about the promise of his kingship. She was a woman in tune with God, and her words cooled David’s hot temper.

When Abigail finished her intercession, she asked David not to forget the good she had done in his presence. Abigail may have recognized that God was going to judge her house because of her foolish husband Nabal. I believe she prepared herself for the worst. Yet God had a great plan for Abigail; He would honor her commitment to Him.

Understand, if you have a husband who is not a believer, or is a foolish husband like Nabal, you do not have to be a partaker of his sin. When it comes to the things of the Lord, you must obey God rather than man. This is what Abigail did. Like Abigail, in humility and honor, you can take the leadership of your home. If you do not take the leadership, what is going to happen? A lack of spiritual leadership will bring confusion to your children.

“We must obey God rather than men!”
