The Irrevocable Call of God

Concerning the gospel they [the Jews] are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience, even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy. For God has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy on all.
Romans 11:28-32

Paul declared God had chosen the Jews; He had made a covenant with them. They are the beloved of God. God has not cast Israel away. Think about your own family for a moment. Maybe there is a family member who refuses to show love toward you. In turning their backs on you; they are a castaway, but that does not change the fact that they are still your family. In the same way, Israel still is God’s people! God continues to love them even though they have rejected Him.

God never goes back on what He has said in His Word. God does not change His mind like you and I. In fact, God knows the past, present and future. God is omniscient. Imagine if you were in an airplane looking downward, and you could see a parade. You would be able to see the parade from beginning to the end. However, if you were watching the parade from the ground, your view would be very limited. You could not see the middle or end of the parade, but you know it is coming. God has the divine ability to see everything––beginning, middle and end.

Knowing the beginning and the end of all things, God, in His mercy, chose the Gentiles to demonstrate His great love toward them, but in doing so, He also showed Israel, His mercy. Even though they had been disobedient, they had that same opportunity to receive God’s mercy. Remember, God can do whatever He wants to do.

No man acts with true wisdom till he fears God and hopes in his mercy.
