United in Mission

David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had indeed come. So David arose and came to the place where Saul had encamped. And David saw the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army. Now Saul lay within the camp, with the people encamped all around him. Then David answered, and said to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?” And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”
1 Samuel 26:4-6

David sent out spies to see Saul’s whereabouts. David and his men arrived at a place where Saul had set up his camp. Then David boldly asked some of his men, “Who will go to the enemies’ camp with me?” David wanted to go on a reconnaissance mission to see what King Saul was up to. David was a man of great faith and action.

Abishai, the brother of Joab, was willing to go; he was united with David in this dangerous mission. David was surrounded by six hundred courageous men just like Abishai who were willing to fight alongside him. They were loyal and faithful. No matter what happened, they would not leave David; they would give their lives for their future king.

Jesus is our King. We are to be united with Him in His mission to save the lost: “…for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Jesus told His disciples who were rugged fishermen: “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Proverbs 11:30 tells us: The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.

We must never lose our passion for the lost––those perishing without Christ. When was the last time you shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ with someone? Remain united with Christ in His mission to save souls.

Lord, I do not claim to understand how You could want to be united with a man like me, but I cherish the fact that You do.
