Seeking the Lord’s Direction
Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” And Abiathar brought the ephod to David. So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?” And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”
1 Samuel 30:7-8
David faced a tremendous trial. When his men turned against him, he strengthened himself in the Lord. He decided to return to the Lord, and seek His direction for all the families that the Amalekites had been taken captive. He really must of felt backed up against the wall. He could not turn to the left or the right, neither forward or backward. The only place left was to look up to God for help. David did just that!
David living in fear of man had acted irrational, but now, as he sought the Lord, he acted rationally. He asked Abiathar the priest for theephod, a garment worn by the high priest, which had a breastplate containing the Urim and Thummim––two stones that determined the will and counsel of God. David began to seek the perfect will of God. Now that David was seeking the Lord once more, the Lordspoke to David.
Notice, David asked God a very direct question: “Shall I pursue this troop?” Then God gave David a direct answer: “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.” David went into battle with a promise from God that he would not lose anyone along the way. How beautiful this is, to see David was once again a man of faith!
In your life, learn to seek the mind of the Lord. It is good to ask be direct questions as you pray. Be specific. In the battles you have to face, God will direct you. He will give you great wisdom. Within His answer He may give you a promise to hold on to for the difficult road ahead.
To trust God in the light is nothing, but to trust him in the dark– that is faith.
