God’s Institutions
In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
Judges 17:6
In Israel’s history, in the time of the Judges, everyone was doing what was right in their own eyes. Today, most people are doing what is right in their own eyes––nothing has changed.
The Apostle Paul taught that Christians should obey the government (Romans 13:1-2), and abide by the rules of the state. Yet unfortunately, what has the state allowed? Some people have challenged the constitution, lobbied congress and demanded in Washington liberal and immoral changes. The homosexuals and lesbians have challenged the sanctity of marriage. They have challenged what God has established. Marriage is to be between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:18-25). When people do what is right in their own eyes, it brings so much confusion. The problem is there is no longer any fear of God (Romans 1).
God has established institutions. The institution of marriage and the home––Adam and Eve became husband and wife. Yet people do not respect marriage or the home. What has happened to the family? Couples should not divorce. God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16). Only death or adultery is a legitimate, biblical reason for divorce. People do not honor God, His Word, which is why there continues to be confusion, and problems within our marriages and our homes.
Before the Law was ever established, government was instituted through Noah (Genesis 9:1-17). God also instituted the Church. It was established in Acts 2, when 120 people were baptized by the Holy Spirit. It is essential to pray for these institutions, marriage, government and the Church.
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior…
