Veterans Day
Now these were the men who came to David at Ziklag while he was still a fugitive from Saul the son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men, helpers in the war, - 1 Chronicles 12:1
Today is the anniversary of the end of World War I—the war to end all wars. That was the hope of the world and the reason nations around the world have celebrated this day since November 11, 1919. Britain, France, Australia and Canada honor the veterans of World Wars I and II on or near November 11 and in Europe they observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11.
It all began as Armistice Day, the first anniversary of the end of the war. In 1954, President Eisenhower changed the day to Veterans Day, because sadly, World War I was not the war to end all wars. There were many more veterans to honor for their service in keeping world peace.
Today, there are approximately 23.2 million military veterans in the United States. Think about that number. As you go about your business today, whether you go to the store, to work, to the gym, where ever you go, you will probably encounter a military veteran—a man or woman who has served our great country.
These men and women willingly choose to serve in our armed services. Many of them have returned home with life altering injuries. They have seen and experienced great suffering and terror. They volunteered to protect our country and preserve our freedoms. This is why we honor them, the mighty men and women of war who have sacrificed tremendously for each one of us, individually. Semper Fi.
The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.
