Mother’s Day

...a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Proverbs 31:30

What a great privilege it is to be a mother! In the United States, Mother’s Day was introduced in the 19th century by a woman named Ann Reeves Jarvis. She lived in West Virginia and started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to help the local women learn how to take better care of their children. Her daughter Anna Jarvis, after her mother’s death in 1905, followed in her mother’s footsteps. She wanted to honor her mother’s legacy for the work she had started. She set a day aside to honor mothers and to give the recognition for the sacrifices they daily make for their children.

On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation to honor mothers every second Sunday in May. In history, Presidents have written much about their mothers’ influence on their lives. John Quincy Adams had this to say about his mother Abigail Adams:

My mother was an angel upon earth. She was a minister of blessing to all human beings within her sphere of action. Her heart was the abode of heavenly purity. She had no feelings but of kindness and beneficence; yet her mind was as firm as her temper was mild and gentle. She had known sorrow, but her sorrow was silent. She was acquainted with grief, but it was deposited in her own bosom. She was the real personification of female virtue, of piety, of charity, of ever active and never intermitting benevolence.

Godly mothers greatly influence their children. Imagine the incredible responsibility they have of training their children––Christ’s little disciples. That is an incredible job! What good things can be said about your godly mother? How will you choose to honor her today?

My mother [Mary Ball Washington] was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.
