Spiritual Gifts

…making a request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of God to come to you. For I long to see you, that I might impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established. . . .
Romans 1:10-11

The Apostle Paul desired to visit the Christians in Rome. He expressed his heart openly, as a tender shepherd longing to care for a flock. It was as if to say, “I want to hold you, kiss you, and hug you. I want to know who you are.”

Paul desired to give something to the church in Rome; he did not want to take anything from them. He wanted to prayerfully lay hands on these believers so that they could activate their spiritual gifts. He knew once these spiritual gifts were activated in the lives of believers, they would have God’s power to do the work of the ministry. The church in Rome would be strengthened—established.

Through the grace of Jesus Christ, each one of us has been given spiritual gifts. Paul wrote about the purpose for them in Ephesians 4:7-16. Consider the important reasons for using your gifts in the church:

And He [Christ] Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ… (Ephesians 4:11-12).

In your life, have your spiritual gifts been activated? God has given you both spiritual gifts and natural talents to be used in the body of Christ. God will give you His power to exercise them according to His will. You can operate your gifts in unity with other believers in the church. This will cause you to become fruitful and productive in the ministry.

You have inside you the capacity to invest your mental, emotional, and spiritual gifts in a way that glorifies God, impacts the world, and satisfies your own soul. I believe that––and I want you to believe it, too.
