The Victors Crown
Then he took their king’s crown from his head. Its weight was a talent of gold, with precious stones. And it was set on David’s head. Also he brought out the spoil of the city in great abundance. And he brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work with saws and iron picks and iron axes, and made them cross over to the brick works. So he did to all the cities of the people of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem. - 2 Samuel 12:30-31
This chapter concludes with David wearing the victor’s crown; a heavy, glorious, gold bejeweled trophy. David is a type of Christ, yet Jesus’ wore a woven, torturous crown of thorns on his head. But in Hebrews 2:9, our conquering Christ was crowned in glory and honor:
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
The Bible mentions five crowns to be given to believers in eternity, they are described as: the “Imperishable Crown” (1 Corinthians 9:25); the “Crown of Righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:7-8); the “Crown of Life” (James 1:12); the “Crown of Rejoicing” (Philippians 4:1) and the “Crown of Glory” (1 Peter 5:4). That blows my mind!
The Bible describes a heavenly scene where twenty-four elders cast their crowns at the feet of Jesus (Revelation 4:10-11). I love this, because Jesus is the one who deserves such honor, not us.
As God will put a veil over his people's sins, so he will, in free grace, set a crown upon their works.
