Deliver Us from the Evil One

“And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
Matthew 6:13

Jesus concluded the model prayer with an important aspect––to pray for deliverance in times of testing and temptation. Who is the evil one? Satan, he is our adversary, the deceiver of the brethren. He is a real person. Satan is not our friend; he is always there to test us. He does not want Christians to be spiritual people, but carnal. While you sleep, he studies and plans the next temptation. He tries to deceive people. Satan lies and tries to take them to hell with himself––that is his goal.

Before Jesus began His ministry, He went through a time of testing in the wilderness where nothing really grows. Understand, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. He submitted Himself to God and the Holy Spirit. Jesus fasted in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights. Satan tempted Him, twisting the Scriptures, but he failed in His attempts to defeat Him. Jesus used the Word of God to fight against Satan’s temptations. He would say to Satan, “It is written” (Matthew 4:1-11).

The Word of God is of great importance in rebuking Satan and his lies. Understand, when Christians go through difficult times of temptation, they can come to Jesus. He is our Advocate––Lawyer. Jesus knows exactly what it is like to go through times of temptation, and He can help us.

During times of temptation, you have been given the freedom to make choices. God is faithful; there is always an open door to escape from the temptations you are enduring. May God deliver us from Satan!

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
