When Leaders Fear

When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits. And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
1 Samuel 13:6-7

Remember, Saul had blown the trumpet and had taken the glory from Jonathan––his son’s victory in battle. Even though King Saul was acting as a warrior a short while before, in the next moment, he was indecisive and weak––sad! As the Philistines gathered against Israel, notice the weakness of Saul’s army; they were so scared to fight them. The men were hiding in caves, thickets, in rocks, in holes and pits. What kind of army is that? They had no faith! Honestly, this was a reflection of Saul’s leadership; he had not rallied his troops to be men of action.

If you are a leader in the Church and you lose your strength, power, and vision, those who follow your leadership example will also become weak. They will not be men and women of faith. People look to the strength of a leader; they must go first into battle––before anyone else.  If a leader is weak, they will discourage people engaging in spiritual warfare. Those who follow your example naturally look to your strength in the Lord for the battle ahead. When they see your trust and boldness in the Lord, then they will also become bold in the fight against the enemy––Satan.

As a godly leader, you set the temperature for those around you. If you have no joy, others will see it. If they notice that you are not excited, but are grouchy-looking, complaining or fearful, they will become just like you. Remember, they are your disciples. Examine your life. Do you hide in fear when you see the enemy launching an attack, or are you a fearless leader?

The fear of God is the death of every other fear; like a mighty lion, it chases all other fears before it.
