Charitable Secret Deeds

“But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.”
Matthew 6:3-4

Jesus taught His listeners the elements of knowing how to give financially to the Lord. They needed to learn the right way to give. It was important to first check their motives, because a disciple of Christ should never bring attention to themselves in their giving. The right way was to give is in secret, with the right heart motive. Then God would be able to use that person’s life in a mighty way; He would reward them openly. I like that!

No one should want to see how much an individual person gives in the church offering. A believer should never make themselves the center of attention. It is important to give in secret with the right attitude. God always sees the real heart motive. Whatever you give to the Lord, and whatever you do to help someone, make sure it is for the Lord and His glory alone.

The Apostle Paul also reminded believers of Jesus’ words: “And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” (Acts 20:35). Have you ever experienced the blessing of giving to the Lord and others secretly? Give and be blessed.

There is a tendency to seek the spotlight when helping others so that recognition and commendation are ours. But blessed is the helper who helps the one in need secretly or unobtrusively. Such help is easier to accept and of it God is fully aware.
