Reasoning with the Rebellious

Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the Lord who raised up Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt. Now therefore, stand still, that I may reason with you before the Lord concerning all the righteous acts of the Lord which He did to you and your fathers….”
1 Samuel 12:6-7

Samuel rehearsed Israel’s history to them, to remind Israel of all God had done for His people. Israel had been so rebellious in choosing a king to reign over them, instead of choosing the Lord. So, Samuel took them all the way back to their past when God, in His awesome power, came through for them––so they would not forget. God was their Deliverer. He rescued them from slavery in Egypt so they could serve Him! It was good for Israel to be reminded and learn of God’s faithfulness.

We can also learn a lot about ourselves from Israel’s history. In the Old Testament, and even in the New Testament, everywhere we read about Moses and the children of Israel, we can learn from their rebellion and failures. What is God trying to tell us today? I believe with all my heart, the Lord wants us to learn from their examples in the past, so we do not do the same things and make the same mistakes.

Christians need to be reminded of who they are in Christ. Let us go back and reflect on what God has done in our past––how He came and delivered us from our sins––delivered us out of hell’s pit! Do you remember how the Lord helped you financially?  In your trials and temptations, when you almost slipped away, do you recall how God gave you a way of escape and put your life back in place? God is so faithful. Seriously, He comes through for us every time. Today, take time to think back and remember all He has ever done for you.

I will remember the works of the Lord;
surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
