Oracles of God

What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God. For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect?
Romans 3:1-3

In the book of Romans, Paul asked people many questions. He asked them about the reality of being a Jew. God chose them to be His special people, and, in the Scriptures, we can trace their heritage back to Abraham. Understand, before the law was given, the just lived by faith. This was true of Abraham’s life: For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness” (Romans 4:3). Abraham was justified and walked in steps of faith before circumcision was ever given (Romans 4:9-12).

Abraham was called of God and by faith left his country and obediently followed Him:

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11:8-10).

The Jews were given the oracles of God––the Word of God—and that makes them very responsible. They have studied the Scriptures and have knowledge of God. The law brought knowledge and the awareness of sin, because nobody can keep the Ten Commandments. That means the law equals condemnation, but it also brings a person to the grace and mercy of God.

Is the law of God written on your heart?

The old Covenant says, “Keep the law and live.” The new covenant is, “You shall live, and I will lead you to keep my law, for I will write it on your heart.”
