False Promises

So Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.” Then Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these things. So Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as in times past.
1 Samuel 19:6-7

Saul was able to convince Jonathan that he was not going to kill David. He may have lied and given a false promise to him. It is possible he never really intended to keep his word. Jonathan believed his father’s promise, and, for a while, all seemed peaceful. David was once again in Saul’s presence. Jonathan was satisfied and in his mind, he thought, Everything is going to be all right. However, this peace would not be long-lasting.

King Saul had a split personality––schizophrenic. He could be all right one moment, but when under demonic oppression, he would go into a fit of anger. At that time, he ignored Jonathan’s counsel and became obsessed with killing David.

God never gives us false promises. He is not a man that He should lie; what He says, He will do (Numbers 23:19). David placed his life in God’s hands, trusting in His promise of redemption: Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth(Psalm 31:5). Our God is called the God of Truth.

Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”(John 14:6). Jesus is truth. He spoke the true way of salvation; it is found in Him alone. In John 16:13, the Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Truth:

…when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

As Christians, we should always keep our promises and speak truth: …putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor.”

He [God] is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He.
