Peacemaker
Thus Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you. For he took his life in his hands and killed the Philistine, and the Lord brought about a great deliverance for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?”
1 Samuel 19:4-5
When Jonathan spoke truth to his father about his friend David, he tested his reactions. He made a point to remind his father of all the good David had done for the kingdom. Under Saul’s command, David was sent out to fight the Philistines. David had won many battles, and the people of Israel rejoiced in all his victories.
Perhaps Jonathan asked his father, “What is the matter with you? Are you jealous?” There was no reason for Saul to be jealous of David. He always followed his father’s commands and kept himself in submission. Jonathan was diplomatic as he tried hard to reason with his father. He was a peacemaker. Jonathan hoped to resolve anything that was troubling his father’s mind. He wanted to defuse his anger and any animosity he felt against David.
Christians are also called to be peacemakers. In Matthew 5:9, Jesus taught:Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Many times familymembers are at odds with each other. They can become contentious, angry and bitter. In the work place there may be jealousies and divisions because of people who are self-ambitious. They do not care who they step on to get up the corporate ladder.
The Apostle Paul advised, if it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men(Romans 12:18). May God help you to be a peacemaker in your home and in your place of work.
To be peacemaker, you must know the peace giver.
