Independence Day
“Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” - Matthew 12:25
British tyranny marked the rule of King George III over thirteen American colonies. High taxation and a long list of other grievances spurred the American rebellion. Thirteen colonies unitedin their cause––there was no division among them. A five man committee was assigned to draft a declaration. Thomas Jefferson was largely attributed with the work. On July 2, 1776, the vote was approved for the separation from Britain. On July 4, 1776 the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence.
The Declaration of Independence was written by godly men who recognized the Supreme Judge of the world. These men united together to address the suffering and injustices of the British.Within the Declaration of Independence are these important statements:
We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by authority of the good people of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these united Colonies are, and of right ought to be free and Independent States… all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved.
The war for America’s independence lasted from 1775–1783. On September 3, 1783, a treaty was signed in Paris, whereby Britain agreed to recognize the sovereignty of the United States, and formally ended the war. Every year, July 4, is the day we celebrate the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. As Americans, we must continue to be united. Divided we shall never stand against our enemies.
