Whom Do You Serve?

For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
Romans 6:20-21

Paul called to remembrance the people’s sorry state when they were slaves of sin. Was there any fruit of righteousness in their lives? No! They were miserable when slaves to their sin. Yes, sin might be fun for a season, but when a person arrives home alone, there is conviction, feelings of guilt, depression, and a sense of their own wretchedness. Paul brought attention to a sad ending. What is the end of those things? Spiritual death!

Christians should not boast about any sinful acts they have committed in their past. It is shameful to mention them! Think how terrible our speech and behavior used to be. When saved by the grace of God, we can no longer do what we please anymore. Jesus is Lord of our lives. We become men and women who love God, filled by the power of the Holy Spirit, and full of compassion. God has changed our hearts. We are not perfect, but God continues to mold and shape us until the day we die.

Seriously, you have to serve somebody; there has to be a determined choice. Who is your master today? To whom are you yielding? Joshua made his choice, and it would be good to follow his example:

“…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15).

Think about your choices in life. Are they made in view of eternity and what God desires for your life? You are not to be a slave of sin, but a slave, a bondservant of Jesus Christ. God will never force you to obey Him––you willingly chose to submit to Him. Jesus is now your Lord. Be holy––live a life set apart to God. Believers will inherit heaven.

“…I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him….”
