The Lust of the Eyes
Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. - 2 Samuel 11:2
David walked on the roof to get some fresh air and looking out at the city of Jerusalem he saw a beautiful woman bathing. In the privacy of his own home, he looked once and then twice. Instead of looking away his eyes lingered and lust entered his heart. I fully believe David was not in the Word of God at this point; he took off his armor and was not guarding himself against his fleshly desires. David had that image in his mind and his flesh would not be satisfied until he had her.
The bible teaches us to beware of the lust of the eyes: For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world (1 John 2:16).
Job gave us a good principle to help protect against the lust of the eyes in Job 31:1: “I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?” He kept himself from adultery by keeping a watchful safeguard over his eyes.
Jesus taught... that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:28).
That is why it is important to... put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts - (Romans 13:14).
Is there anything in the privacy of your own home that you are watching that is causing you to want to satisfy the lust of your flesh?
The best way to keep the enemy out is to keep Christ in.
