God’s Prophets
Then Saul said to his servant, “But look, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread in our vessels is all gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” And the servant answered Saul again and said, “Look, I have here at hand one-fourth of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.” (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he spoke thus: “Come, let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer.)
1 Samuel 9:7-9
Saul’s servant had suggested they go and speak to the man of God about the lost donkeys. He knew that whatever the seer spoke came to pass. It was customary to give food, water or something else of value to the seer for his help. Saul and his servant discussed what kind of gift they could bring to the man of God. The servant had one-fourth of a shekel of silver. The amount may have only been worth pennies today, but silver in the days of Samuel was rare.
Notice the short commentary added for our understanding. A prophet was known as a seer (1 Samuel 9:9) and had spiritual perception––the Lord spoke to them: “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream” (Numbers 12:6).However, every word predicted would have to come to pass for anyone to be a prophet from the Lord (Jeremiah 28:9).
Isaiah was a prophet who lived about 700 years before the birth of Christ, and yet he prophesied in Isaiah 7:14, about the coming Messiah: “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” In Luke 1:30-33,the prophecy was fulfilled––incredible.
Prophecy is not given to make men prophets, but as a witness to God when it is fulfilled.
