Prepared for War

When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves repulsive to David, the people of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand foot soldiers; and from the king of Maacah one thousand men, and from Ish-Tob twelve thousand men. - 2 Samuel 10:6

Israel’s enemy is preparing for imminent war. The people of Ammon understood that David would no doubt fight against them. They had mistreated David’s servants and rejected his hand of friendship.  In their plans to defeat David they called on the arm of the flesh. They added soldiers to their numbers by hiring their close Syrian allies.  In their own minds they must have thought they would have plenty of strength to come against David.

Satan is our enemy and he is always planning his attacks against us. His strategy is often to find us unprepared, off guard and not watching. We must always be prepared to meet our enemy when he attacks and be aware of his tactics. Think about these questions: “Are you getting lazy in reading your Bible and praying?”; “Have you stopped going to church and fellowshipping with other believers?”

Ephesians 6:10-11 exhorts every Christian: be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.Put on the whole armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

There is nothing so likely to produce peace as to be well prepared to meet an enemy.
