Make Us a King
Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
1 Samuel 8:4-5
Can you believe this? Because of the bad testimony of Samuel’s sons, the elders began to complain. They could not see how this corrupt leadership could continue. So instead of looking to God, they looked to the example of the heathen nations who were ruled by a king. This was so tragic. God wanted to reign over them, but they no longer wanted God to rule over them––they wanted a king!
God desires to rule over people’s lives and bless them, but if people see a lack of spiritual leadership in the church, they will go elsewhere. Jesus Christ needs to be seen, not only in the leadership, but in any believer’s life, otherwise they will go back into the world. We have to be concerned with people’s spiritual needs and help them to grow in Christ.
The church needs leaders who are spiritual––those who can lead people to trust in God. A person in a leadership position must have biblical answers for the people. They must give them the hope in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We need to be men and women of the Word (2 Timothy 2:15). Those called to preach in the pulpit must preach Christ! That is the priority. People need to be saved!
