Keeping your Promises
Now David said, “Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” And there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, So when they had called him to David, the King said to him, “Are you Ziba?” He said, “At your service!” - 2 Samuel 9:1-2
Remember David was dealing with the family of Saul, who had become his enemies. King Saul in a fierce battle against the Philistines had been killed, as claimed by an Amalekite. All his men and his three sons, including Jonathan, died in the same day. David and Jonathan were close friends. David had been forced to flee from Saul and in Jonathan’s farewell we see they both made a promise to each other:
“Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, “‘May the LORD be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants, forever’” - (1 Samuel 20:42).
At this time, David still sought to keep the promise he made to his friend Jonathan. Notice how he now makes contact with Ziba, a servant from the house of Saul; he is going to keep His word and fulfil his past promise to Jonathan.
This reminds me of God, He will fulfill all His great and precious promises given to each one of us individually (2 Peter 1:2-4). As a child of God, think about the promises you have made to others, have you kept them?
It is easy to make promises; it is hard work to keep them.
