Following Instructions

“Then you shall go on forward from there and come to the terebinth tree of Tabor. There three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive from their hands.”
1 Samuel 10:3-4

The prophet Samuel continued to give specific directions to Saul. After Saul found the two men by Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah, he was to go forward from there to the terebinth tree of Tabor. At this place he would meet another three men who were goingto Bethel, which means “the House of God.”

Samuel told Saul exactly what they would be carrying. One would be carrying three goats, another three loaves of bread, and the other a skin of wine. He also told Saul they would greet him, and the one carrying the bread would give him two loaves. Saul was to receive the loaves from him.

Imagine, Saul was given very detailed instructions by the prophet Samuel. Saul simply had to follow and obey what Samuel was saying to him. It was important that Saul listened to Samuel, because Samuel listened to the Lord. As the new King of Israel and commander of Israel’s armies, Saul was to remain in submission to the authority of God. He needed to learn to follow instructions given to him from the Lord, through the prophet Samuel.

As Christians, it is important for us not only to read God’s Word, but obey it. Can you follow the detailed instructions given to you in God’s Word?

Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge…
