The Dawning of the Day

When they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the top of the house. They arose early; and it was about the dawning of the day that Samuel called to Saul on the top of the house, saying, “Get up, that I may send you on your way.” And Saul arose, and both of them went outside, he and Samuel.
1 Samuel 9:25-26

Notice, Samuel spoke to Saul on the top of the house––the roof!   That might seem weird to us, but in Israel the house tops had flat roofs, and it was a place where many different things were done: bathing, sitting, washing and hanging clothing. Remember King David and how he fell into the sin of adultery? He saw Bathsheba bathing on top of the roof, and he lusted after her (2 Samuel 11:1-4).

The prophet had called to Saul from the top of the house, at the dawning of the day, to speak with him before sending him on his way. Saul listened carefully to all Samuel’s words. More importantly, think about how God calls to us to meet with Him. Is there a place in your house where you daily meet with God? Do you read God’s Word and listen to what He says to you before you go on your way?

Seriously, we should never leave our homes without seeking the Lord and praying for our day. We never know what the day ahead holds for us. It might take self-discipline to wake up early from our sleep––before the dawning of the day––but it is a spiritual necessity to listen to the voice of the Lord. We need God’s wisdom and guidance for each day.

King David, despite his failings, wrote: O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water (Psalm 63:1).  Does your life seem spiritually dry? Has something else replaced your thirst for God? Renew your fellowship with God; seek Him at the dawning of the day.

My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord;
in the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up.
~Psalm 5:3~
