The Law Our Tutor

But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
Galatians 3:23-25

How I thank God for the book of Galatians. It would have been better to read the letter without chapters and verses––straight through. It would give a better understanding. As we come near to the end of this chapter, in review, Paul had spoken about justification through faith and why the Law was given. He clarified for us the purpose of the Law, which was to point us to Jesus Christ.

Paul continued forward in his argument to prove salvation was by grace, through faith, and not by the schoolmaster––the Law. The Law reveals to us the need for God’s grace. When we accept Christ as Lord and Savior, we become righteous, and the Law is put away from our lives. So long as we walk by faith and abide in God’s love and grace, the Law has no effect. The moment we fall from grace, once again the Law condemn us.

The believers in Galatia had fallen away from God’s grace. They went back to rules, ordinances and regulations. Christians can backslide and fall away from God’s grace, as well. Sadly, they can choose to leave the Lord and go back to their old life in the world. As with God’s chosen people, they simply need to return to the Lord.

God desires for all those who have strayed away from His love and grace to return to Him: “…for the LORD your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn His face from you if you return to Him” (2 Chronicles 30:9). Have you strayed away from the grace of God? The only way to escape the condemnation of the Law is to return to Jesus.

“Look to Jesus, with all your sins, doubts, and fears; naked and guilty, just as you are, look to Jesus. Everything besides Jesus is a fallacy, a deception and a lie.”
~C.H. Spurgeon~
