One Mediator

What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one.
Galatians 3:19-20

Good question Paul! To what purpose does the Law serve? Paul clarified why the Law given. You see, sin was not imputed to Man’s account until the Law was given to Moses. When the Law was given, it gave sin the character of transgression. The Law showed to mankind their sinfulness: But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead (Romans 7:8).

The Law has conclusively proved our sinfulness. It has brought us to the point of personal conviction and guilt, to show us our need of a Mediator:

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:19-20).

We are all sinners. The nature of man is sinful. Romans 3:23 tells us this truth: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Interestingly, even though a person may not be a Christian, they still have the conscious knowledge of sin. The Law has condemned them. It became a schoolmaster to show them their sin and their need for a Mediator. The Law was valid until Christ came; He fulfilled the Law and became a curse for us (Galatians 3:13). Jesus the “Seed” is our Mediator.

Understand, the Law shuts up the way to eternal life; it points to Christ. The only avenue to escape death and hell is to come to Jesus Christ by faith.

We dare not approach the Father except in Christ because of our sins. We first fasten our eyes upon Christ, then upon the Father. If Christ does not bear our guilt and reconcile us unto God, we perish! Before any man can think to stand before the face of God’s justice or be admitted to the secret chamber of God’s mercy or partake of the riches of His grace, he must look to the Mediator, Christ Jesus.
