Presidents’ Day

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.
1 Timothy 2:1-2

Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. It was originally established in 1885, in recognition of President George Washington. In fact, it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government, even though February 22 is Washington’s actual date of birth.

The holiday became known as Presidents’ Day after it became a part of the 1968 Monday Holiday Law, to provide more three-day weekends. This Act was signed into law on June 28, 1968, and took effect on January 1, 1971. Congress hoped to "bring substantial benefits to both the spiritual and economic life of the Nation."

While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Presidents’ Day is viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present. Despite sharp division in our government today, in the White House, President Trump is still in office. Despite his human flaws, God has placed him there. He alone lifts up one and puts down another (Psalm 75:7).

Christians have an incredible obligation to pray and intercede for him. Any decision he makes will affect our great country. Our President has made positive decisions relating to our Christian values. He has said, “We’re proudly announcing historic steps to protect the First Amendment right to pray in public schools.” He has also proclaimed the value life in the womb, “When we see the image of a baby in the womb, we glimpse the majesty of God’s creation.”

Trump has allied with Israel, “America and Israel are woven together by history, heritage and the hearts of our people.” This is important because Scripture tells us: I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.
