Christ’s Intercession for Us

Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
Romans 8:34

Paul began this verse with another good question, “Who can condemn us?” No one! The gift of salvation is freely given to us by God through His Son. His purpose in leaving heaven and coming to earth was to die for our sins. He became the atonement for our sins. Christ submitted Himself to the will of the Father, and He paid the debt for our sin on the Cross.

Imagine, if God had never sent His Son, we would have been doomed! Christ made us one with God (John 17:21). Christ’s blood has cleansed us from our sin (1 John 1:7). God remembers our sins no more: As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us (Psalm 103:12). There is no more guilty charge, no judgment–– our sins have been paid for! It is through the grace and mercy of Christ that we are set free. We are judged, “Not guilty.”

Satan may try to condemn us. He always attempts to bring a guilty charge against us. He comes before God in heaven to accuse us, saying, “He is guilty.” Yet Christ stands up for us as our Advocate. He makes intercession for us:

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father––Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:1-2 BSB).

Jesus Christ is our Lawyer. When Satan accuses any one of us, Christ stands up to defend our case, saying, “This child is one of mine.” The case against us is dismissed. Who can bring a charge against you when any accusation given is discharged by our Advocate? Nobody!

Jesus Christ alone can be our Advocate …in achieving our pardon in the divine court of justice.
