Whisperers in the Wilderness
Now it happened, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines that it was told him, saying, “Take note! David is in the Wilderness of En Gedi.” Then Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the Rocks of the Wild Goats.
1 Samuel 24:1-2
Remember, God had spared David’s life. He had sent Saul in another direction to fight a battle against the Philistines. David was now enjoying a needed time of rest. He was at peace with God in the strongholds of beautiful En Gedi––amazing!
David’s rest would not be long. Yet again, someone reported to Saul that David was in the Wilderness of En Gedi. This report stirred much unrest in Saul’s mind and caused Saul to rise up once again to continue his pursuit of David. Saul took three thousand men with one intent––to get the job done––to kill David once and for all.
As a Christian, you can be at peace with God, but there are those around you who will want to bring some accusation or information against you to the attention of others. Whisperers and talebearers are never liked. The psalmist spoke about those who whispered together: All who hate me whisper together against me; against me they devise my hurt (Psalm 41:7).
How can people damage a close friendship? Proverbs 16:28 answers that question: A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates the best of friends. You cannot tell a private matter to someone who cannot keep confidences. Proverbs 11:13 tells us: A talebearer reveals secrets… Be careful who you trust with your personal business. Only confide in faithful people, those whom you can trust.
