For I am already being poured out as a drink offering,
and the time of my departure is at hand.
(2 Timothy 4:6)
Ever since his conversion, Paul had offered everything to God: his money, scholarship, time, the vigor of his body, the acuteness of his mind, and the devotion of his heart. Only life itself was left to offer, and gladly he would lay it down. For the Christian, death is laying down the burden in order to rest; it is striking camp in order to take up residence in the heavenly places; it is casting off the ropes that bind us to this world in order to set sail on the voyage ending in the presence of God.
