Let Your Kids be Kids

Today's Scripture

"Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it." " Proverbs 22:6 NLT

Thoughts for Today

Today let's look at two mistakes single parents often make with their children. One occurs if you allow your child to assume the role of the missing spouse. Seeing your own grief or sadness, some children will try to assume the role of the lost parent in order to make you feel better. While it is good to assign chores and regular jobs around the house, no child should be expected to become the man of the house or a little mother. Let your children be children and you be the parent.

Other parents try to become their child's friend and confidant rather than the parent. Your children need an adult they can count on, not a good buddy. Don't let feelings of guilt that your children are deprived of a father or mother keep you from fulfilling your parenting responsibilities. Your children can have other buddies—you are their only parent.

Consider this …

Single parenting is an awesome responsibility. Always remember, you are not alone. If you will keep your eyes on Jesus, he will comfort you, he will guide you and he will give you the strength and courage you need.

Prayer

Lord, help me direct my children on your path. Help me not to be ruled by guilt or a desire to be their "buddy." Give me the strength to be a wise and loving parent. In Jesus' name …

The Single Christian: Living as One in a World of Twos by Dr. Elizabeth Holland. In a world where everyone seems to have a mate, it is difficult to live life as a single person. Whether you have never been married, are divorced or are widowed, this study is for you. In The Single Christian, Dr. Holland examines many of the different facets of singleness, from rejection; bitterness and unforgiveness; loneliness; to dating; single parenting and the positives of being single. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups, and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals.
