Walk with Faith

Today's Scripture

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” - (Hebrews 12:1–2 NLT)

Thoughts for Today

“The sin that so easily trips us up.”

What is that sin in your life? Is it a behavior? An attitude? A relationship?

How can you overcome it? Keep your eyes on Jesus. He is “the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” There it is again. Faith. Faith in Jesus. That is our way to forgiveness and eternal life. And that is the way to overcoming sin in our day-to-day walk.

Consider this …

Unbelief is a sin in itself.

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 NLT)

And unbelief can trigger thoughts and actions that make us give up. That fill us with fear. That discourage us. That keep us from becoming the person God has designed us to be. Here are just a few examples of the thinking that can come from unbelief:

God will not fulfill my emotional needs.

He will not supply my financial needs.

My problems are too much for him.

I’m not worthy. He won’t help me.

No one cares.

I might as well give up.

Any of these thoughts sound familiar? Refocus! Keep your eyes on Jesus, “the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” With him, all things are possible.

Prayer
Lord, I have not been trusting you as I should. I have focused on my weaknesses and my circumstances instead of on Jesus. Help me keep my eyes on Jesus. Help me walk by faith and overcome the sin in my life. In Jesus’ name . . .

Stepping into Freedom: A Christ-Centered Twelve-Step Program
by Jimmy Ray Lee, D.Min. This twelve-step program is suggested for use in support groups, recovery groups and home groups. It offers help for anyone struggling with a life-controlling problem like drug addiction, alcoholism, sexual addiction, gambling or workaholism. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals or couples.
