Civility at Work

Tom Coburn, conservative Republican Senator from Oklahoma, and President Obama became friends as freshmen in the Senate. Their friendship has grown, in spite of their differing political views. This has occasionally brought Mr. Coburn criticism from his constituents.

In 2009, according to the Wall Street Journal, about 50 Oklahomans wrote Senator Coburn to complain about his hugging the President on national TV. Mr. Coburn's response was "How better to influence somebody than to love them?"

Jesus taught in Matthew 5:43-44, "You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

If we had more politicians following Mr. Coburn's lead, we might see a revival in civility. Are you willing to love your enemy?
