God Came to Live With Man
Adam and Eve’s disastrous experiment with complete independence from God ended very, very badly. Among the worst of the consequences of their rebellion was the disconnecting of their daily personal interaction with their Creator. They were driven from their beautiful home in the Garden and blocked from returning by an angel with a flaming sword.
It was the mission of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, to restore that broken relationship. He would bring back true “Sabbath” (the serenity and rest that characterized the seventh day of creation). He would come to earth to bring back the joy of God’s personal presence: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
He came not only to live for us, not only to die for us, but also to live again for us. And even though he withdrew his physical presence when he ascended to heaven, he promised to be with us in spirit, listening to our prayers, speaking through his Word, becoming one with us in the Holy Supper, and clothing us with himself through the washing of Baptism.
The end of the Bible promises that God will do it again, and this time permanently. When Christ returns, it will be Christmas all the time: “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them” (Revelation 21:3).
