We made it
Jason Nelson

Don’t you wonder what was running through Jesus’ mind as he hiked up the Mount of Olives for the last time, his happy little band chattering along in anticipation of something? What did he recall with each step—a cow stall, carpenter shop, storms, healings, beatings, crucifixion, a first deep breath, the stench of hell? Who could blame him if he got to the top, looked heavenward, and whispered to himself, “I made it.”

This little hill meant a lot to Jesus. He taught there and prayed there. He wept over Jerusalem there. He would return to God as God from there. We don’t meditate on the ascension the same way we cherish the chain of events 40 days prior. But what Jesus finished on the cross he delivered to us in his ascension. His work was complete. We have redemption through his blood, the power of the Holy Spirit, the charge to be his witnesses, and the promise that he will return for us.

Jesus prepared his disciples for this mountaintop experience in the upper room: “I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am”(John 14:2,3).

We are going where Jesus is. Because he made it, we will too.
