Respect your enemy
Pastor Mark Jeske
People so badly want heaven on earth. In the decades before the Civil War, idealist dreamers who wanted to perfect humanity established dozens of “utopian” communities all over the American Midwest. Robert Owen, for example, founded New Harmony, Indiana, to build “a New Moral World of happiness, enlightenment, and prosperity through education, science, technology, and communal living.” His utopia lasted only a couple of years. New Harmony and the others all broke down for the same reason—you can’t perfect sinners. Satan keeps coming after us.
Respect your enemy. He is relentless. He is also mortally wounded and enraged by Christ’s victory on Calvary. St. John heard the voice of an angelic messenger with grim news for us all: “Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short” (Revelation 12:12).
Satan could not defeat God and was thrown out of heaven. Satan could not defeat Christ and could not prevent the resurrection and triumphant ascension of the Savior. All that is left to him is to attack God’s children, hoping to drag as many of us into hell with him as he can.
Respect your enemy. He cannot overpower you by force, but he can try to persuade you to commit spiritual suicide. He cannot rip you out of Jesus’ arms, but he will try to persuade you to jump. Soon Jesus will come for us. In the meantime, hang on!
Challenge Grant makes your gift worth TWICE as much!
Generous donors have stepped forward with a $50,000 grant—and they’re challenging friends like you to meet it in full!
That means your gift will be worth TWICE as much to help share the timeless truths of God’s Word through television and digital outreach.
When you give, we’ll say thanks by sending you our new book, Grief Doesn’t Have the Last Word. It will encourage you about how much God loves you, how he brings great blessings out of losses, and how he’s making things turn out for your good.
