Pastor Mark Jeske
The story of King Joash of Judah is the mirror image of Manasseh’s. He had an outstanding beginning to his reign and enjoyed great favor from the Lord. He listened to the wise counsel of elderly Jehoiada the priest, carrying out a major renovation and rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem.
Then came the crisis: “After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them. They abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols” (2 Chronicles 24:17,18).
What a sad, sad story. It shows us that Satan can get his hooks into people even if they have been active believers for many years. People can lose their faith. Like Joash, we are strongly influenced by the people we choose to have around us. Other strong believers can lift us up. Bad company corrupts even good people.
Learn from Joash. Your faith needs not only an initial flame but stamina for the long haul. Don’t get careless and let down your guard. Let God’s Word speak to you daily. Choose your friends carefully. Have a pastor whom you can trust and who will tell you the truth about yourself. Feast on the Lord’s Supper to build your faith. Make weekly worship and Christian fellowship a life priority.
Build your spiritual stamina so that you can finish well.
Urgent goal for an urgent need!
Help reach a $116,000 goal by February 28 to reach a generation of young people who are disengaging from their faith . . . and are increasingly leaving the church.
And when you give today, we’ll send you the book More Than Enough to say thanks for helping share Jesus’ love with more young people. As you face circumstances in life that cause you to doubt and worry, the empowering truth from this book will remind you all over again of the greater reality that’s in your life. And that’s Jesus.
