God’s “perhaps”
Pastor Daron Lindemann

The blue ribbon in my front yard says that I appreciate police officers. The picture on my mantle of a police officer says even more. My son is a police officer.

I know. It’s dangerous. But he is willing to take that risk for a greater reward: peace and safety in a wicked world. Perhaps at a personal cost to him. But I sure hope not.

I feel like the vineyard owner who “sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed” (Luke 20:10). He sent more servants but the tenants beat and abused them too. Then the owner did the unthinkable: I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him” (Luke 20:13).

Perhaps?! He sees the vicious, abusive behavior and yet holds out only an iffy perhaps? Doesn’t he understand the risk?

In this parable Jesus is teaching us that God’s mercy goes beyond our norms of reality. God responds to our sins that hurt others, our abuse of his good gifts, and our repeat offenses of bad sinful habits by increasing doses of his patient love. Even if it costs him his own Son.

Let the “perhaps” of God be not a risky failure but a hope of God fulfilled in you because you will respect his Son. God didn’t make a mistake when he sent his Son, Jesus, for you.
