Positive For Pregnancy
Luke 1: 34-39
The OBGYN walked back into her examining room with the sonogram in her hand. “Well, take a look. You’re definitely pregnant.” The response was not the usual. “Exactly how many weeks ago did I get pregnant? It’s important so I can figure out who’s the father.” In today’s culture for many doctors this is no longer a surprise. Young women, like young men, are expected to enjoy themselves, and sex is one of life’s greatest enjoyments. The sex classes teach about proper protection, but in the heat of the moment it’s easy to forget. So unwanted pregnancies come and many are terminated, but a long time ago in a faraway place this was not the case.
In Nazareth when Gabriel announced to Mary, not that she was pregnant, but that she soon would be, Mary replied with a strong question.
“Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be since I’ve never had intercourse with a man?’ The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you. The power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the One to be born will be holy. He will be called the Son of God.’” Luke 1:34-39
This Christmas use the fact that Mary was sexually inactive before the consummation of her marriage to Joseph to empower young women to follow her godly example and help both young men and women to rely upon Jesus’ power to give them the ability to enjoy sex in marriage and to refrain outside of the marriage covenant.
LORD, thank you that Mary, though betrothed to Joseph, had remained pure and was still a virgin before their official wedding vows. Thank you for this incredible miracle that your Shekinah overshadowed Mary and she miraculously became pregnant with your Holy Son. During this Christmas Season, help many understand that Jesus is fully human but he is also fully divine. He is the only baby ever born who can fully take this title—God’s Son.
