Gone with the Wind
In the classic 1939 movie,Gone with the Wind, the story begins in 1861 on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Scarlett O’ Hare lives with her two sisters in prosperity, complacency, and romantic intrigue. But war interrupts Scarlett’s passion for the man who chooses to marry her sister, and by the end of the film the winds of war have swept away her father, her daughter, her baby, and plundered Tara, the mansion where it all began. Her fickleness, lying, and lust for her sister’s husband reap the loss of everything.
In the 8thcentury Hosea told his people that they too had “Sown the wind. They will reap the whirlwind.”’
“For they sow the wind and they will reap the whirlwind. There is no standing grain. The sprout will produce no flour. Were it to produce grain, foreigners will swallow it. Israel is swallowed up; now she is among the nations as a vessel no one wants. For they have gone up to Assyria, like a solitary wild ass. Ephraim has tried to give away her love.
Although they have given themselves to the nations, now I will gather them together. They will begin to waste away under the oppression of the mighty king.” Hosea 8:7-10
Instead of courting their true love, the living God who revealed himself on Mt. Sinai, guided and provided through the wilderness, defeated their enemies in the Promised Land, and gave them a king like David, 8thcentury BC, Israel was depending upon foreign powers like Assyria and Egypt. They adopted their polytheism, their worship of images, their sexual promiscuity, and their dependence upon might not right. All the time they thought they were doing all this in worship of the Lord. It was all a lie, and like Scarlett O’ Hare, Hosea warns they will reap the whirlwind. In Texas we certainly know what the tornado can do.
LORD, expose any dependence in my own heart upon false gods, false power techniques, and giving in to the rejection of your moral commands. Today help me to let the gift Jesus gave me, the wind of the Spirit, to generate not destruction, but life in my life.
