Calming Fear

Luke 1:30-33

Terrorist bombing and shootings have become part of our routine, but when they strike close to home, they still kindle fear in our hearts. Just a loud bang at a football game, and the crowd immediately tenses up. In the presidential campaign debates about who can keep us safe took center stage. When the bullets and shrapnel wound in our home neighborhoods we immediately ask. Why can't our leaders protect us?

It's important for us to pray for our law enforcement officers, especially those in our local area. We all know that each of us need to be aware of our surroundings at all times, but the Virgin Mary got an unexpected visitor that frightened her. When the angel Gabriel appeared to her, her reaction was fear. But His announcement to her not only calmed her fears but it can calm all of our fears.  Mary gave birth to the baby who will one day rule the world, and when He does terrorism and death will be destroyed.

“And the angels said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Note this! You will conceive in your womb and your will bear a Son. You will call His name Jesus. He will be great, called the Son of the Highest. The Lord God will give to Him the throne of David, His father, and He will rule over the House of Jacob forever and His Kingdom will never end.'” Luke 1:30-33

LORD, help me to rest in the power of Jesus, the Son of David, Your Son. What a miracle that You caused Mary to conceive our Savior. Help me never to forget that His Kingdom will not fail. Terror and death will not ultimately win so I don’t need to fear. Use this crisis in Paris to open hearts to the freedom from fear that only Jesus can give.
