“Remember, I’m in charge here!” “Don’t you know who I am?” “I’ve got the authority!”
If someone has to keep telling me about their authority and leadership, they’re not actually in control. Real authority is even secure enough not to take recognition from the wrong sources.
Mark has told us that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God (1:1) and John the Baptist announced that Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy that the Lord, himself, had come. In case we missed it, the Father shouted from heaven that this was his beloved son (1:11), and when Jesus called his first disciples, they immediately left their fishing and followed him (1:18, 20). But when the demons tried to shout out his identity, Jesus silenced them. His divine authority didn’t need any help from the opposition.
“And when they entered Capernaum, right away on the Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching. They were amazed by his teaching because he was teaching them as one having authority and not like the scribes, the Jewish legal experts.
Right then while he was teaching in the synagogue, a man with an impure spirit cried out, “What is it between you and us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God.” Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent and come out of him!’ The impure spirit shook the man, cried out with a loud voice, and exited out of the man.
Everyone was shocked, discussing among themselves, ‘What is this—a new teaching with authority—an authority so powerful that he commands the impure spirits and they obey him?’ This report about him spread all over the surrounding area of Galilee.” Mark 1:21-28
From time to time I’ve come across supposed exorcists who make a big deal about their power to exorcise demons, claiming to have the right words and techniques. I’ve learned to be wary of these claims. There was a powerful assault from the demonic world as Jesus initiated his ministry in Galilee, but he didn’t put flyers all over Galilee to come to his special meetings to witness either exorcisms or physical healings. He didn’t have to because he actually is the one with the authority.
LORD, humble me totally under your authority, and when I teach, help people to hear your Spirit through your Word. Protect your children from false authorities who try to control their lives and extort their money. And thanks for the reminder that Satan and his demons don’t have a chance against your Son.
