The Love of the Law and the Law of Love [Part 2]
Are you ready for some good news?
God doesn’t want you to love the law; He wants you to experience the law of love.
Today’s Text: “Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God, and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”” (Genesis 28:20–22, ESV)
If grace is so wonderful, why do humans seem to love the law so much?
I know so many people who’ve accepted Christ and moved from their life of rebellion into living under law rather than living under grace. “Well, I was really rebellious in my former life, but now, I’m going to get up every morning and I’m going to read my Bible for an hour and a half and then I’m going to pray for an hour. Then I’m going to go to work and witness to everybody in the office all day long. Then I’m going to go to a Bible study….”
We can make anything into a law – our spiritual practices, and even our spiritual experiences. For instance, some say that if you don’t sing for an hour at church, then you won’t really meet God; some say if you sing at all you won’t meet God. Some say you need to be quiet; some say you need to shake; some say you need to meditate; some say you need to shout.
We can turn anything into a law. Why can’t we just experience grace and let it be grace? You’d think we would be repelled from the law because it is singularly unsatisfying and impotent to actually help us in any way. But the law offers us an illusion of control and a familiar system for life that we think we need.
The good news is that God’s love is greater than our love of the law. The invitation of God to you today is to come out from under the law and come into God’s love. The love of God will not let you go. The love of God bathes and washes away all fear and legalism. If you find that you are living under a law that you made for yourself, then you have the right to revoke it. If you find that you are living under a law that is found in Scripture, then you have Jesus, who has already fulfilled it! Embrace the love of God – it will change you. And that’s the gospel!
