Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. - Romans 12:15 ESV

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT

Have you ever been to a funeral where the bereaved one was offended at someone’s well-intended comments of “comfort”? It’s certainly helpful to lift the spirits of a friend who is hurting but consider that this might not be the place to start. Or maybe you’ve watched someone reach a milestone in their life only to receive comments from a well-wisher such as, “Now, all you have to do is this.” Perhaps we should start with God’s instruction to share their feelings.

When Jesus went to the grieving Mary’s house after the death of Lazarus, He was deeply moved by the tears of Mary and the attending Jews. And He wept too. Why would Jesus weep? He knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead and all would rejoice. He wept because His friends were hurting. Empathy. Sharing the feelings of those around us communicates that we are with them, that we are on their side. That we love them. Celebrate with those who celebrate and grieve with those who grieve.

PRAY

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the compassionate example of Jesus. Please help me to show love when supporting the people I share this life with. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

REFLECT

Is there someone in your life right now who just needs someone to show that they understand?
