I had a young evangelical college student say, “I grew up in church. They are all a bunch of hypocrites in that church. So I decided I would turn away from my childhood faith.” I said, “That’s really interesting. So you turned away from Jesus and you’re not really going to let Him be the center of your life because you think that all of His followers are hypocrites. Who told you that hypocrisy is evil? Who’s the major teacher who taught that?
The heart of the Sermon on the Mount is that our righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees. Jesus exposes the hypocrisy of external religion, so what sense does it make to turn away from Jesus because He’s the ultimate one that teaches against hypocrisy?
